I love this one too.

What an awesome collection you have.I have a few West German vases(nothing as spectacular as this!) and, oddly enough, have bought them inexpensivly in stodgy old antique shops where frou frou frilly porcelain is the usual fare.Hopefully,it will stay that way for awhile.

West German Pottery (WGP)

Submitted by Madbrit on Tue, 07/29/2008 - 6:18pm.

Hi Shastacola

Living in Germany means almost every week day i can tour the local junk shops, and go to fleamarkets at the

weekends, so it has been easy to amass a large collection, however these days i am more selective than those early heady days where i bought anything that moved. So tell me what WGP makers do you collect. Also there are many great East German Potteries to like Strehla, Römhild, and VEB Haldesleben

Regards Kevin

Spectacularly dramatic

Submitted by mpratt on Fri, 02/15/2008 - 7:53am.

This vase is spectacularly dramatic and quietly sophisticated. The West Germans have some brilliant glazes and textures. What is the decade?

Yay! Modish has gone International at last!

Dear Madbrit,

I was overjoyed to see your wonderful German pottery pieces, since I also collect them, especially Bay Keramik and Scheurich.   So many of our U.S. pottery makers were originally from Germany, especially the glaze makers.

I hope you also post photos of the backstamp!  Many of these pieces don't actually have a stamp, but an incised number and it's great to have them for reference.   What books do you recommend on the subject?

Best regards,

Fran E.

Here's the bottom of the Bay Keramik "vase"... or, I suppose it's a weed pot.

fantastic shape & glaze!  Is this a production piece as opposed to a studio piece?

I love this German pottery,  and collect it whenever I can, but know absolutely nothing about it!

The Kiessling piece is

Submitted by Madbrit on Sat, 02/16/2008 - 5:55am.

The Kiessling piece is Studio so limited production run, the Bay piece below would have been late 60s as in the 70s they stopped making decorative ceramics. The Bay piece although studio in appearence is a massed produced moulded item. Many WGP companies like Bay and Scheurich compensated the mass production side with superb glazes.
