Shenango Mobile Cup & Saucer

I think the Mobile saucer must be the Colonnade shape but am unsure about the cup. Is it the Wilmington shape? The saucer is marked Shenango China / Rimrol WelRoc / E24. The cup is marked Rimrol WelRoc / A20.

Shenango Mobile

The cup does look to be the Wilmington shape. But it's a bit more complicated than that. There were at least two Wilmington shaped tea cups. One called Wilmington OB and the other WIlmington BH. The Wilmington OB is the shape that the catalog shows for Mobile. It has a more oval band-like, traditional cup handle with no filled in band like the broad handled cup in WIlmington BH. Your cup, the BH version, is the one I find most often, but again, not the one shown in the catalog. I don't know what OB and BH indicated, but I think they probably referred to a style of handle.

The saucer I'm not certain. Rimrol refers to the circular rib "shock absorber" that is a molded midway between the outer edge and foot of the underside of a plate. It reinforces the plate to help prevent breakage and assist in gripping. Rimrol was used on plates and for a short period of time on platters. Welroc was a reinforced thickening of the center well of the underside of a plate. It was designed to prevent starred cracking from improper stacking. Welroc was not introduced until 1955-56.

Shenango Mobile List

Submitted by mpratt on Mon, 11/26/2007 - 8:53pm.

I posted Mobile shapes listed in a Shenango catalog in the Library under Charts and Lists. I also posted the Royal Rim Deep Soup bowl. I'm wondering if we can get others to post their finds in this pattern. If we can gather more shapes, we could create a page dedicated solely to the pattern. That goes for any other line or pattern.

Addendum, actually, a page was just created under Current Exhibitions that will automatically pull any item marked Shenango Mobile under the keyword list, into the Shenago Mobile gallery.
