Glass

Francis Higgins made this plaque about 10 years ago. Its abstract design was created by pressing fused, clear matte glass shapes into figured black plaster. A secondary detail of shiny glass dots with gold crosses add even more visual interest. The same glass dots are used around the embossed brass frame. The interplay of black texture, glass and metal in this piece is masterful. It measures 14-inches high by 10-inches wide.

Hey Scott,
There's a lot of stuff in your photo collection I've never seen! I've seen those "shiny glass dots with gold crosses" though. You've likely read this in the Higgins 'Poetry in Glass' book, but in case you didn't ... those are actually the punchouts from the GE clocks Higgins made (page 116). Another example of their creative use of refuse.
There is always something new to learn!
Brian, I didn't know that about the glass dots from the Higgins GE clocks. Thanks for pointing that out. Michael and Francis were absolute masters at reusing everything--nothing went to waste in the Higgins studio.
