Ernest Sohn

This massive coffee pot is typical Sohn construction. Introduced in 1958 as a new gift from 225 Fifth Avenue in New York City. The stand included an alcohol burner. The vintage retail price of this piece was a whopping $20 with stand.
How that ceramic handle has survived the test of time, is beyond me. The finial is solid brass. The brass-plated metal band is reminiscent of Seibel's Town House China by Gilley.
I had the great privilege of meeting and interviewing Ernest Sohn. I'm reviewing a letter he sent me around Easter 1999. He writes: "The time of Easter surely gives so much good reason to be thankful to 'be'--'live''--within the wonders of reawakening of nature: the wonders of creation!"
When asked to describe his design philosophy, he responded: "clean--simple--functional."
