Ernest Sohn

This is Sohn casserole was most likely introduced in the early 1960s, I would guess in 1962 or 1963. It is perhaps one of Sohn's most elaborate in terms of combining materials. The ceramic casserole was produced by Hall China, this shape was introduced first in 1954 or 1955 combined with a brass cover and stand. The warming stand, which features a candle-holder, is composed of brass-plated metal and wood legs (the metal extends through them.) The cover is wood (probably walnut) with a enamel plaque inset in it. This piece is a bit over the top, and one of my favorite Sohn items in my collection!

Were there other pieces in this line? The stand looks similar to so many other stands from the period. Was this stand and were the stands in Copper and Color made by Sohn's metal company?

What a great piece!. I have always loved Sohn's pieces with enameled copper. But this one wins the prize - ceramic, wood, enamel, and a wood and bentwire base. Wow.
Other pieces
There were other pieces that used the same enamel motif. However, these were usually just wood with enamel inserts or components (ashtrays, cigarette boxes, bookends, etc.) not other pieces that incorporated ceramic parts like this one did as far as I know.
Yes this stand is similar to many other stands that Sohn used during this period and to ones other companies used. I believe they were made for Sohn in New York City at this point and possibly at his own factory but I am not positive on that. The Copper and Color stands were made by Sohn's metal company in Wisconsin.
